SHEIKH THAFIER NAJJAAR (South Africa) – Challenges of Halal Certification

“There is no doubt that the halal industry is growing and expanding globally. With that, we see that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. So automatically, we will find that the world’s interest in halal consumption will also continue to grow. The halal certification has extended beyond halal foods. It includes a variety of industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. What we find that the halal is a religious affiliation and unfortunately we find that the halal certification is not innocent from being subject to corruption, undermining and also very important the recognition of non-Muslim as certifiers, as herein lies the challenges for us as certifiers more than the technical aspects thereof. In order to overcome these difficulties, we must stop thinking about just ourselves, but others and strive to act together. We should know that when we consider ourselves superior to someone else, it means that we aspire to degrade rather than glorify. “
